{"id":28333,"date":"2026-08-12T20:13:05","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:13:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=28333"},"modified":"2026-08-12T20:13:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:13:05","slug":"jcb-hydromax-reaches-650km-h-plus-in-hydrogen-speed-record-bid-on-bonneville-salt-flats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=28333","title":{"rendered":"JCB Hydromax reaches 650km\/h-plus in hydrogen speed record bid on Bonneville Salt Flats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The only man to break the sound barrier on land has set another speed record, driving a hydrogen-powered vehicle at an average speed of 653.9km\/h at Utah\u2019s Bonneville Salt Flats.<\/p>\n<p>The achievement, which remains subject to official ratification, would make the purpose-built \u201cHydromax streamliner\u201d the fastest hydrogen-powered vehicle recorded.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\n         man at the wheel was Andy Green, a 64-year-old retired Royal Air Force pilot who drove JCB\u2019s bright yellow streamliner, a 10m-long vehicle powered by twin hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty years ago we came to Bonneville with JCB Dieselmax and showed what British engineering could do with diesel power. Today we have done it again, this time with engines powered by hydrogen,\u201d JCB chairman Anthony Bamford said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis record was set by production-based engines, the same engines powering JCB diggers right now. That is the point of JCB Hydromax: it shows hydrogen works, and it works today at the highest level with zero emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to JCB, a British construction equipment manufacturer, the Hydromax recorded an average speed of 644km\/h on its first run and 663km\/h on its second. Under the rules, land speed records are based on the average of two runs in opposite directions completed within one hour.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting average of 653.87km\/h surpassed the previous hydrogen internal-combustion record of 298.5km\/h set by BMW\u2019s H2R in 2004, Forbes reported.<\/p>\n<p>While the new benchmark is a significant milestone for hydrogen-powered transport, it remains well short of the outright world land speed record, according to the Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that title almost 30 years ago when he drove the jet-powered Thrust SSC to 1227.985km\/h in Nevada\u2019s Black Rock Desert in 1997, becoming the first person to officially break the sound barrier on land, the Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle bears little resemblance to a conventional road car.
