MotoGP could follow Formula 1 by introducing a budget cap.<\/p>\n
MotoGP is considering the introduction of an F1-style budget cap, sporting director Carlos Ezpeleta has confirmed.<\/p>\n
In an interview with Motorsport.com, Ezpeleta explained that although there is no direct correlation between money spent and track success in MotoGP, an upper limit could benefit the manufacturers and championship.<\/p>\n
F1\u2019s annual budget cap covers most areas of car design and performance, including staff salaries. However, driver salaries, the three highest-paid staff, marketing and travel are excluded.<\/p>\n
The cap, introduced in 2021, is monitored by the FIA through financial auditing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It is credited with encouraging a range of new manufacturers to enter the sport, while helping those already participating to turn a profit rather than plough every available dollar into car design, or risk slipping down the order.<\/p>\n
"It's a very ambitious goal because the [MotoGP] constructors\u2026 come from different companies, backgrounds, and are organised differently,\u201d Ezpeleta told Motorsport.com.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt needs to be studied, but if there's a will, there's a way."<\/p>\n
While F1\u2019s cost cap was aimed at breaking the link between budget and results, Aprilia\u2019s giant-killing performances in MotoGP this season illustrate that two-wheeled success is already much harder to buy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s needed for different reasons,\u201d Ezpeleta confirmed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t have a problem on track. That is very important to highlight.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re seeing now that some of the manufacturers are outperforming [those with bigger budgets].<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I do think is that it\u2019s important to build a rationale into how and why we\u2019re doing this…<\/p>\n
"We have an opportunity before us. I believe some of the manufacturers have significant room to reduce their budgets."<\/p>\n
A MotoGP budget cap would also have the support of former F1 team principal and new Tech3 KTM boss Guenther Steiner.<\/p>\n
