In the Senate, the Greens have attempted move an urgency motion urging the government introduce a 25 per cent tax gas exports.<\/p>\n
The motion, which has been moved by Greens senator Steph Hodgins-May, calls for a "fair return" from gas resources.<\/p>\n
"We are at a time when we are seeing these massive corporations like Woodside, like Santos, like Shell, recording record war-time profits," Hodgins-May says.<\/p>\n
"This government has been unwilling to stare down around 12 multinational gas exporters and say: 'Hang on guys, time to pay your fair share.'"<\/p>\n
Shadow Resources Minister Susan McDonald has criticised the motion, which she says is "ridiculous", and says the issue has been discussed previously.<\/p>\n
"This is an activist-run campaign, a thinly veiled attempt to shut down fossil fuels and future prosperity in this country," McDonald says.<\/p>\n
The motion has failed, though, with Labor, the Coalition and One Nation voting against it.<\/p>\n
ACT senator David Pocock voted with the Greens in support of the motion.<\/p>\n
Labor MP Peter Khalil and Liberal MP Zoe McKenzie have joined the Afternoon Briefing political panel, where they've discussed the PM's melon gaffe.<\/p>\n
The federal opposition has written to the AFP, urging them to investigate an apparent leak of correspondence between Japan and Australia regarding the incident.<\/p>\n
