As the Detroit Lions near two weeks of training camp, head coach Dan Campbell was asked for an update on the injury progression of star safety Kerby Joseph.<\/p>\n
"Well, Kerby right now, first of all, he's dealing with a personal issue right now. But, his rehab is coming along very well. OK, so I still see him on the (Brian) Branch plan if that makes sense. And Branch is doing well, too. So, those guys, we're talking about on down the road, the season's already begun, but I like where Kerby's at," Campbell said.<\/p>\n
Joseph was limited to just six games played last season with a knee injury. The 6-foot, 210-pound safety was the NFL's interceptions leader with nine in 2024 en route to a first-team All-Pro nod. The Illinois alum had three interceptions last season in his limited action.<\/p>\n
Joseph was placed alongside fellow star safety Brian Branch on the Lions' Physically Unable to Perform list prior to training camp.<\/p>\n
Campbell provided an initial injury update on Joseph and Branch heading into training camp on July 29.<\/p>\n
"OK, Kerby, everything that I told you in the spring, it still applies to that. We've been working to this, but we're still in this, OK, he's running on ground, we're starting to do change of direction, some of this. But, we're not going to grind this for another two or three weeks, man. I cannot give you a true answer.<\/p>\n
"He's working his tail off. He's not really had a vacation. He's been here with our guys busting his tail, so he's putting in the work, he feels pretty good right now. But, we've got a long way to go and there is still an unknown. But, I like where he's at, we like where he's at," Campbell said of Joseph to open camp.<\/p>\n
The Lions' first preseason game is Thursday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. ET. Detroit then has preseason dates versus the Washington Commanders on Saturday, Aug. 22 at noon ET and at the Indianapolis Colts at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 29.<\/p>\n
The Lions open their 2026 NFL season against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. ET from Ford Field in Detroit. The game will air on Fox.<\/p>\n
