{"id":24264,"date":"2026-08-11T09:50:20","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T09:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=24264"},"modified":"2026-08-11T09:50:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T09:50:20","slug":"heathrow-says-need-for-expansion-clear-as-it-loses-title-of-europes-busiest-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=24264","title":{"rendered":"Heathrow says need for expansion \u2018clear\u2019 as it loses title of Europe\u2019s busiest airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>West London airport reports 7.86 million passengers in July, compared with 8.15 million for Istanbul<\/p>\n<p>Heathrow airport has argued \u201cthe case for expansion has never been clearer\u201d after it lost its position as Europe\u2019s busiest airport to Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p>Figures published on Tuesday showed 7.86 million passengers passed through Heathrow\u2019s four terminals in July,whereas its Turkish counterpart recorded 8.15 million passengers over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>Annual figures from the trade body Airports Council International show Heathrow was Europe\u2019s busiest airport from 1996 to 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s biggest airport, located west of central London, lost that position in 2020 amid coronavirus travel restrictions before regaining it in 2023 and holding the title since then.<\/p>\n<p>Heathrow\u2019s July passenger total was 1.5% down compared with the same month last year, whereas Istanbul saw a 2.3% boost.<\/p>\n<p>The US-Israel war on Iran has had an impact on Heathrow\u2019s passenger traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Its passenger numbers on Middle East routes in July were down 20.2% year on year.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, Heathrow continues to operate its two runways at near full capacity, and is seeking government permission to build a third.<\/p>\n<p>An expansion proposal by the airport\u2019s owners would enable it to accommodate 150 million passengers per year. It recorded 84.46 million passengers in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Heathrow said: \u201cHeathrow is operating at capacity.
