More than 280 families in south Delhi\u2019s Navjeevan Vihar have adopted a zero waste to landfill model, turning household waste into a resource through segregation, composting, and recycling. Residents separate wet and dry waste at source, compost kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetable peels for gardening, and send dry waste like plastic for recycling.<\/p>\n
Gopa Banerjee, a resident, said, \u201cWhen wet and non-biodegradable waste are mixed, they can cause environmental harm. Segregated wet waste can turn into compost, while dry waste can be recycled.\u201d<\/p>\n
The initiative is led by Dr Ruby Makhija, Secretary of the Navjeevan Vihar Resident Welfare Association (RWA). She explained that segregated waste from homes is collected and processed at dedicated facilities, preventing landfill disposal. \u201cThe real concept is zero waste to landfill. We must reduce the waste we generate, use it responsibly and ensure that nothing reaches the landfill unnecessarily,\u201d Makhija added.<\/p>\n
The colony has also implemented a QR code system for waste collection, enabling residents to notify sanitation workers who then collect the waste promptly.<\/p>\n
Young residents have joined the campaign over the past three years, emphasising awareness and behavioural change. Student Bhavuk said, \u201cOur aim is not just to create awareness, but to bring positive behavioural change. As Gen Z, we should not wait for change\u2013we should become the change.\u201d<\/p>\n
Navjeevan Vihar\u2019s approach illustrates the impact of community participation, household segregation and technology in effective waste management. As India advances towards cleaner cities and a circular economy, the colony demonstrates that segregated and responsibly processed waste can be transformed from a burden into a valuable resource.<\/p>\n
