In Bengal, a new generation of artists is revitalising Rabindra Sangeet by incorporating Bharatanatyam, saxophones, guitars and digital platforms, while preserving the tradition\u2019s literary and cultural essence.<\/p>\n
Rabindra Sangeet, a collection of over 2,000 compositions by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, blends classical ragas and Bengal\u2019s folk traditions. The songs address themes such as love, nature, spirituality and a wide range of human emotions.<\/p>\n
For many young performers in Kolkata, Rabindra Sangeet represents more than just a performing art; it is a vital link to their cultural heritage. Artist Shubhanita Ghosh stated, \u201cWe grew up listening to Tagore\u2019s stories, poems and songs. They have always been an important part of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, this younger generation is not merely replicating traditional performances. They are exploring new forms of presentation, such as combining Rabindra Sangeet with classical dance. Bharatanatyam artist Jhinuk Mukherjee commented, \u201cTagore expressed countless thoughts and emotions through his songs and writings. Almost every emotion of human life can be found in his work,\u201d explaining why his works lend themselves to contemporary interpretation.<\/p>\n
The revival extends to instruments and musical practices. Sukrit Sen performs the Shrikhol, a percussion instrument linked to Bengal\u2019s 15th-century Vaishnava Bhakti movement. He views preserving such traditions as a personal responsibility, saying, \u201cThis culture is in my blood. It is my responsibility to carry this heritage forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, modern instruments and fresh arrangements are attracting broader audiences. Musicians are incorporating saxophones, guitars and Western musical styles to present familiar compositions innovatively. Artist Sharoni Poddar merges traditional Baul and Bengali folk music with contemporary arrangements and is also composing new music. She explained, \u201cOur effort is to preserve the essence of Bengal while presenting traditional and folk music in a new way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Guitarist Debmalo highlighted the role of digital platforms, stating, \u201cDigital platforms like YouTube are important because they help us take our music to a much wider audience.\u201d These technological tools serve as a bridge connecting traditional music to younger listeners.<\/p>\n
This evolution of Rabindra Sangeet and Bengal\u2019s musical traditions illustrates a broader cultural trend in which young artists utilize contemporary forms and technology to sustain, rather than replace, tradition. Through dance, new instruments, fusion arrangements and digital media, their aim is to ensure Bengal\u2019s musical heritage continues to thrive and engage future generations.<\/p>\n
