Together, Cloudflare says the two tools give marketers the data to understand and act on how they appear in AI-generated answers.

Stephanie Cohen, Cloudflare’s Chief Strategy Officer, framed the shift as a fundamental change in how businesses need to think about discoverability.

“Being discoverable used to mean ranking on a page. That’s not enough anymore. The agentic era is here, and the moments that matter, like when someone asks an AI for a recommendation and gets an answer back, are happening at scale, invisibly, without most brands knowing if they’re in the conversation at all.”

Cloudflare says its advantage over rival tools comes from its position at the network layer between AI platforms and the websites they access, which it says allows it to observe actual crawl and referral activity across millions of sites, rather than relying on smaller samples of test prompts.

Cloudflare’s launch is not happening in isolation. A search of current commentary on AEO turns up a crowded field of specialist agencies, software vendors and marketing platforms, virtually all offering paid AEO audits, dashboards or “AI visibility scores” to Australian businesses.

Several Australian-facing agencies market AEO packages directly at small business owners, with entry pricing for a baseline audit and action plan running from roughly 1,500 to 2,500 dollars, according to one provider’s published pricing. Others promise free initial visibility audits before upselling into paid strategy work.

What is largely missing from the public conversation is independent analysis. A review of current commentary on AEO found no journalist, academic or analyst assessment of the field that was not produced by a company with a commercial stake in AEO tools or services. HubSpot, Acquia, Cloudflare and a long list of smaller agencies all publish guidance and statistics on the topic, and all of them also sell a product built around it.

That does not necessarily mean the underlying behavioural shift is fabricated. Separate data from Salesforce’s Fourth Edition State of Commerce report, released this month, found traffic referred from AI chats to commerce sites grew between 150 and 428 per cent year on year across every quarter measured, a trend echoed in consumer survey responses showing more shoppers starting their purchase research with a question to an AI rather than a search engine or a retailer’s own site.

It does mean, however, that business owners currently have very little way to independently verify whether any specific AEO tool or agency claim, including Cloudflare’s own, delivers the results advertised.

Business owners do not need a paid audit to get a rough sense of where they stand. Several agencies suggest the same simple starting point: open ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overview and type the kind of question a customer might ask, such as “best accountant in Parramatta” or “reliable plumber Brisbane open now.” If a business is not named in the response, that is a visibility gap worth noting.

Beyond that, the practical advice circulating across both vendor and non-vendor sources is broadly consistent with long-standing SEO fundamentals: keep website content accurate and current, structure pages so questions are answered clearly and directly, maintain an up to date Google Business Profile, and ensure a site is technically accessible to crawlers, something Cloudflare’s Agent Readiness tool and several competitors check for free or as part of a broader existing subscription.

Whether a dedicated AEO tool or agency engagement is worth paying for on top of that is, for now, a judgement call SME owners will need to make with limited independent evidence either way.

Source: Read the original article on dynamicbusiness.com

Cloudflare’s new dashboard claims to reveal if AI assistants recommend your business, but the whole AEO industry has a trust problem.
