{"id":21297,"date":"2026-08-10T05:16:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T05:16:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=21297"},"modified":"2026-08-10T05:16:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T05:16:25","slug":"ex-us-defense-secretary-calls-clarity-act-a-national-security-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/futureknowledge.in\/?p=21297","title":{"rendered":"Ex-US defense secretary calls CLARITY Act a \u2018national security bill\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former US Defense Secretary Mark Esper says the CLARITY Act is not merely a financial services bill, its a national security one.<\/p>\n<p>A former US defense secretary has urged the Senate to pass the CLARITY Act, arguing that weak digital asset rules create openings for North Korea and China to undermine American financial power.<\/p>\n<p>In an op-ed in the Financial Times on Saturday, former US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said Beijing is already investing in state-directed payment systems to sidestep American supervision and erode the US dollar\u2019s central role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have long argued that China is the greatest strategic threat of our lifetime,\u201d said Esper, who also serves as a member of the Coinbase Global Advisory Council.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also said the act would give the US better tools to cut off crypto-specific loopholes that can be used by North Korean actors such as the Lazarus Group to avoid US financial controls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Act also extends the Treasury\u2019s potent special-measures authority under section 311 of the USA Patriot Act \u2014 one of our sharpest weapons against rogue actors,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Senate is expected to vote on the CLARITY Act on Sept. 15. On Saturday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune filed cloture to bring the CLARITY Act to the Senate floor for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why the Clarity Act, now before the Senate, is not merely a financial services bill.
