Ricky Gervais\u2019 new animated sitcom Alley Cats hit Netflix yesterday, and it\u2019s fair to say it was a little divisive.<\/p>\n
The general critical consensus was that the show, about a grumpy, foul-mouthed cat called Gus who\u2019s trying to help a lost kitten get home, wasn\u2019t very good.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Indeed, Metacritic, a site that aggregates review scores, has given the show a rather paltry 39\/100.<\/p>\n
But that\u2019s just a number, isn\u2019t it? What did fans and critics really think of Alley Cats? Well, we\u2019ve done a round up of the general reaction to Rick\u2019s new show<\/p>\n
Sadly, The Independent gave it one star and called it \u2018abrasive, smug, and completely mirthless,\u2019 and The Telegraph said it was \u2018abysmal\u2019 in a zero-star review.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, another reviewer (who I hear is exceptionally handsome) wrote that Alley Cats was \u2018the televisual equivalent of a black hole of bad ideas\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Wow, powerful stuff. I must remember to thank whoever wrote that\u2026<\/p>\n
As I say, though, not everyone thought Alley Cats was complete bilge.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Variety wrote that it was \u2018enjoyably low-key binge\u2019 and The Guardian claimed it had \u2018glimmers of potential in this comedy\u2019 (although they still only gave it two stars).<\/p>\n
To be fair, The Times, the UK\u2019s newspaper of record, gave it three out of five and there\u2019s a glowing quote from Heat Magazine on the poster calling it \u2018delightful and outrageous\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Still, it\u2019s important to remember that Ricky doesn\u2019t really care about critics, as he explained during a recent live stream where he was asked what advice he\u2019d give to up-and-coming comedians.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sitting in front of his hoard of gleaming gold prizes and gongs, the Derek star said: \u2018When I first started out I wanted affirmation. I wanted a five-star review, and I wanted to win an award.<\/p>\n
\u2018Actually, I didn\u2019t want to win an award, but when I did I really liked it, but I did want to get good reviews from the posh papers, as opposed to caring how many people watched it or came to the gig.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018Now I\u2019d tell a young comedian \u201cdon\u2019t worry about that\u201d. It doesn\u2019t matter because they\u2019re so fickle, everyone gets a turn. They don\u2019t mean it. They judge it differently to the people you\u2019re trying to make laugh\u2026 worry about the public.\u2019<\/p>\n
