Now it means either buying a new machine or paying a premium to have more storage configured. Neither option feels reasonable when the laptop itself works fine. I&#039;ve dealt with this across multiple machines, and the workaround I&#039;ve landed on costs almost nothing to start and scales as you need it. If you can&#039;t upgrade your laptop easily, use my method instead.<\/p>\n<p>Laptops just aren&#039;t built the way they used to be. In the race to make everything thinner and lighter, manufacturers started soldering storage directly onto the motherboard instead of leaving it as something you could swap out later. I remember decades ago, you could pop off the back panel, pull out the old drive or RAM, and drop in a bigger one in about ten minutes.<\/p>\n<p>That&#039;s just not possible anymore on most machines. Whatever storage you pick when you&#039;re buying the laptop is what you&#039;re stuck with. That becomes a real problem pretty quickly. Games are massive now, video files chew through space fast, and apps keep getting bigger with every update.<\/p>\n<p>Once that fixed internal drive fills up, your options aren&#039;t great. You can buy a whole new laptop just because you ran out of room, which feels wasteful when the machine itself runs perfectly fine. Or you can pay the manufacturer a small fortune to configure it with more storage upfront, which is its own kind of hassle. Either way, you&#039;re spending serious money just to get more space.<\/p>\n<p>That&#039;s the situation you run into when you own a laptop. This is why I generally hate having to deal with them, despite owning multiple. The good news is people have mostly figured out a way around it. Since you can&#039;t upgrade the inside, you expand from the outside. Just make sure you&#039;re okay with what could come if you go too far.<\/p>\n<p>Laptops are generally not as good as towers, so it&#039;s easy to burn them out or mess up the battery if you run them harder than they&#039;re meant to be run. I have ruined my best laptop because I used it carelessly, so you&#039;d do well to learn from my mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped recommending ThinkPads for repairability (and what to buy instead)<\/p>\n<p>When your laptop won&#039;t open up, and you can&#039;t add storage internally, one of the better workarounds is to pool together a bunch of cheap USB flash drives and plug them all in at once. The basic setup is pretty simple; all you need is a USB hub with several ports and some inexpensive thumb drives. There are plenty that are cheap, but you can often get 64 GB drives for well under $20, so you can pick up a handful without much pain.<\/p>\n<p>The advantage is you don&#039;t have to spend a lot upfront. Instead of dropping serious money on a high-end multi-terabyte external SSD or whatever overpriced expansion your laptop manufacturer sells, you can start small and build as you go. A hub and two or three drives are enough to get started, and when you need more space, you just buy another drive and plug it in.<\/p>\n<p>I switch them out every so often and have made drives specifically for areas I need them for. I have one for pictures and videos, one for my programs and scripts, and more for other things. I have plenty of smaller ones that I can use if needed, like my USB with games.<\/p>\n<p>You can also buy an external SSD. I&#039;ve had such a bad time with these that I don&#039;t recommend them at all. I&#039;ve used Seagate and another big brand, and they died on me and caused me to lose my files. I trust flash drives a lot more than an external SSD.<\/p>\n<p>There are time sucks, and then there are time sucks.<\/p>\n<p>If you would rather have the best of both worlds, Windows has a feature called Storage Spaces that takes all those separate little drives and merges them into a single storage pool that shows up as one big disk. When that pool gets full, you add another flash drive, and Storage Spaces folds it right in.<\/p>\n<p>It also automatically spreads the data across all the drives to keep things balanced, so no single drive ends up doing all the work while the others sit mostly empty. I don&#039;t like using this because I&#039;d rather decide what files go where, but if you just care about having more space, this is what you need.<\/p>\n<p>But the hub you choose matters more than people usually realize.
