One of the biggest cultural phenomena in recent years was \u201cBarbenheimer,\u201d which focused on the amusing dichotomy in the simultaneous July 21, 2023 release of the colourful and whimsical Barbie\u00a0and the harrowing drama of\u00a0Oppenheimer.<\/p>\n
In the gaming space, perhaps the closest analogy to this actually came three years earlier when the cuddly Animal Crossing: New Horizons\u00a0and ultra-violent Doom: Eternal\u00a0launched at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We\u2019ve also seen other examples like the dual-launch of Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder in 2023.<\/p>\n
But now, a pair of Toronto indie games are getting a Barbenheimer of their own.<\/p>\n

Today, August 6, the second and final act of Soft Rains\u2019 sci-fi immersive sim Ambrosia Sky and Kitten Cup\u2019s wholesome animal adventure\u00a0Capy Castaway are both debuting on PC. And like other Barbenheimer-type scenarios, these two games are markedly different, which the teams have been leaning into in \u201cCapySky\u201d social media posts.<\/p>\n
In Ambrosia Sky, you play as Dalia, a woman who has the haunting task of exploring the remnants of her colony to harvest DNA from the deceased. Capy Castaway, meanwhile, is a vibrant romp through a fictional version of Toronto that stars an adorable capybara pup and humorously cranky crow.<\/p>\n
Our reviews of both games are linked above, but suffice it to say they\u2019re absolutely worth playing, and for reasons you probably wouldn\u2019t expect, no less. In particular, Ambrosia Sky offers a melancholic but ultimately uplifting rumination on mortality, while Capy Castaway finds is a touching celebration of both wildlife and Canadiana. They\u2019ll both make you feel good \u2014 just for very different reasons.<\/p>\n
Ambrosia Sky is available on Steam. Those who already own Act One will get Act Two as a free update at no additional cost. The full game is available for $19.49 at a 20 per cent launch discount before a price increase on August 14.<\/p>\n
Capy Castaway is also available on Steam for $21.59 (a 10 per cent launch discount from $23.99).<\/p>\n
