India’s residential rooftop solar power capacity under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) surpassed 16,000 MW in August with Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra leading the tally.
Under the PMSG: MBY, the pan-India installed residential rooftop capacity stood at 16,185.48 MW covering 54,65,417 households as of August.
However, the cumulative monthly residential rooftop capacity under the Yojna fell roughly 11.6 per cent m-o-m from 1,592 MW in July to around 1,407 MW in August. More than 4.48 lakh applications were received overall last month against over 3.57 lakh installations.
According to the data compiled by JMK Research & Analytics, Uttar Pradesh led residential rooftop solar installations with 228.95 MW capacity, followed by Maharashtra at 212.51 MW and Andhra Pradesh adding 192.39 MW last month.
During August, Uttar Pradesh received 89,901 applications for setting up residential rooftop solar units, against 73,709 installations. Maharashtra’s installation count stood at 61,110 against 79,679 applications. Andhra Pradesh received 22,557 applications against 14,648 installations, as per data from the PMSG: MBY portal.
Currently, more than 80.62 lakh applications have been received for setting up residential rooftop solar plants against over 46.44 lakh installations covering roughly 55.28 lakh households taking the total installed capacity to 16,369 MW. So far, more than ₹30,885 crore has been released as subsidy.
The scheme is benefiting roughly 1 lakh households every six days. The pace of installation has increased about 3.2 times over the last three quarters, rising from 5,038 installations per day in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 installations a day in July 2026.
Under the scheme, households can obtain up to 300 units of free electricity every month, depending on system capacity, generation and consumption. Where applicable, surplus electricity can also be exported to the distribution network, allowing households to derive additional value from their rooftop systems. This effectively introduces the idea of prosumers–a citizen who is both a consumer and producer of electricity, the official added.
India is rapidly scaling up its renewable energy capacity. For instance, it added 35.13 GW of net new power generation capacity in H1 2026, a 54 per cent growth Y-o-Y. This was driven by higher capacity additions in solar, wind and coal, as per the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).
Renewables accounted for more than 87 per cent, or 30.58 GW, of the total installations with solar power alone adding 26.34 GW capacity in H1 2026, which is three-fourths of the total power generation capacity added during the period.
