As the States aggressively compete to attract the next wave of global capability centres (GCCs), Keralam is laying out the red carpet in an unusual way to get these high value hubs to its soil.
On September 5, the State will launch its “GCC boilerplate” — a plug-and-play regulatory blueprint paired with attractive fiscal perks, positioning its tier-2 tech hubs, especially Kochi, as a friction-free alternative to saturated mega-cities.
At the vanguard of this push is the swank ‘i by Infopark’, a multi-storeyed co-working facility at the Ernakulam South Metro Station.
The inclusive workspace, touted as one of the first neurodivergent-friendly co-working facilities, has attractive interiors uniquely designed using sensory cues of smell, sight, taste and sound. Beyond the aesthetic, the co-working building in which Zoho is the first tenant, serves a highly-functional corporate purpose.
“We want ‘i by Infopark’ to be a soft-landing centre for companies looking to establish a footprint in Kochi,” says Susanth Kurunthil, CEO of Infoparks Keralam, describing how they are deliberately not filling up the 48,000 sq ft facility, holding a significant amount in reserve for GCCs. “They can register their business here and use the facility for free for six months while they scout for a permanent space. We will handle all the facilitation and registrations.”
The ‘i by Infopark’, built by the Kochi Metro Corporation, is certainly a showpiece of how an office space can become an easy-to-access hub; it is located within a metro station, and a proposed skybridge will connect it to the Ernakulam South Railway Station, while the bus terminus, boat jetty and water metro stations are all close by. Once the next phase of the metro is built in the city, the downtown co-working space will connect seamlessly to the bustling Infopark campus at Kakanad, where Kurunthil said 2 million sq ft of office space is available, with an additional 4 million sq feet under construction.
A tour of ‘i by Infopark’ certainly lives up to the access promise as you step out of the metro train and negotiate an access gate to ride the elevator to the third floor, from where the co-working spaces begin, all the way up to the 9th floor.
On the 10th floor is a space still under construction, conceived as a chill-out zone, with views of the backwaters in the distance.
Kurunthil said that Keralam would host curated events quarterly to pitch its advantages and is inviting global CXOs. “We are going after specific industry verticals. The idea is that instead of going after everything, we would rather play to our strengths. The first focus will be aviation and travel; we have enough of a story, with Air India’s tech centre and travel software firm IBS located in the State.”
Other verticals the state is looking at are energy, oil and gas and maritime and logistics. Kurunthil stressed that cities like Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are now ready with infrastructure – both physical and social – and can offer a superior quality of life.
