The ICMR has stressed that the current situation does not indicate the emergence of a new H1N1 strain, and there is no reason for unnecessary fear.

The H1N1 flu virus is still spreading in India, but scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have said there is no need to panic. The viruses currently circulating in the country are similar to the strain that has been spreading globally since 2025 and are not new, according to the ICMR.

“Scientists have made it clear that no new H1N1 strain has been found. They also said that the viruses currently spreading in India are well matched with the flu vaccine strains recommended for the Northern Hemisphere,” said an official from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

According to ICMR scientists, the H1N1 viruses currently found in the country are similar to the A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1) pdm09 strain. These viruses have been spreading since 2025 and belong to clade 6B.1A.5a2a, subclade D.3.1.1

The ICMR has stressed that the current situation does not indicate the emergence of a new H1N1 strain, and there is no reason for unnecessary fear.

H1N1 is a type of seasonal flu. In most cases, it is not serious and people recover with proper rest and care. Common symptoms include fever, cough, headache and body pain.

However, young children, older people and those with other health problems can be at greater risk of serious illness. Anyone whose symptoms become worse, last for a long time or become severe should see a doctor, scientists advise.

“Health authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation through regular testing and surveillance. People are advised to take normal precautions and seek medical help when needed,” the official noted.
