Dolly Parton's Hollywood Walk of Fame star was found marked with apparent fresh scratches just days after her death at 80, shortly after flowers and other tributes were cleared for pre-planned maintenance, according to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
The damage was reported days after Parton's death on 25 August, when fans began gathering at the Hollywood Boulevard landmark to leave flowers, cards, candles and personal messages in remembrance of the country music singer.
Images and video from the site showed the star becoming covered with floral tributes shortly after news of her death emerged.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said repair work had already been planned because Parton's star had pre-existing cracks. However, the Chamber later said the star appeared to have been vandalised after the memorial items were cleared so maintenance could begin.
No suspect has been publicly identified, and authorities had not disclosed how the damage was caused as of Tuesday, 1 September.
Lore Corona said she and her daughters visited Parton's star on Monday, 31 August, intending to leave flowers and pay their respects to the singer, songwriter, actor and philanthropist.
In a video filmed at the site, Corona said they arrived to find what appeared to be scratches across Parton's name. She said: 'Somebody decided to do this about 10 minutes before we got here.'

The footage appeared to show marks running across the name on the star. Corona said the area had become an informal memorial in the days since Parton's death, as fans travelled to Hollywood Boulevard to honour an artist whose career and public life reached audiences across generations.
Parton's Hollywood Walk of Fame star became one of several places where admirers publicly marked her death. News footage and photographs from 25 and 26 August showed visitors laying flowers and notes at the landmark, while the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce placed a memorial wreath at the site.
Parton, known for songs including 'Jolene', '9 to 5' and 'I Will Always Love You', built a career that extended across music, film, television and philanthropy. Her death prompted tributes from fans in Los Angeles, Nashville and elsewhere.
Corona said in her social media post that an unidentified worker at the location told her that a woman had kicked over candles left at the memorial and used a shard to scratch the star.
The account has not been independently verified. No law enforcement agency has publicly confirmed that candles or a shard were involved, and no Hollywood Walk of Fame representative has publicly identified the person believed to have caused the apparent damage.
It also remains unclear when the marks were made. Corona said she believed the incident occurred shortly before she and her daughters arrived, but that timeline has not been independently established.
