Paradise Lost Studios has officially announced A Sector Darkly, a new open-world 2D space exploration RPG that is set to launch in Steam Early Access for Windows PC in Q4 2026.
Drawing inspiration from beloved classics such as Starflight 2, EV Nova, Star Control, and Distant Worlds, A Sector Darkly puts players in command of a single ship and its crew rather than an entire fleet or empire. The game promises a blend of exploration, trading, real-time space combat, scavenging, crafting, research, and survival, all within a living galaxy where every decision can shape the journey ahead.
The story begins with players stranded in an unfamiliar region of space after becoming lost far from home. As they search for a way back, they’ll encounter the invading U’Guul, whose blockade is cutting off star systems across the sector. At the same time, rival alien civilizations are pursuing their own objectives, while entire sectors mysteriously disappear into darkness. Uncovering the truth behind these “Dark Sectors” eventually becomes just as important as finding a route home.
Players will have the freedom to approach challenges in different ways, whether through diplomacy, commerce, exploration, or combat. Ship customization, crew management, crafting, and research all play key roles, while interactions with 11 unique alien races influence how the story unfolds. Alliances can open new opportunities, while rivalries may turn every encounter into a dangerous gamble.
With its focus on player choice, dynamic faction relationships, and classic-inspired space exploration, A Sector Darkly looks set to offer a deep sci-fi adventure for fans of open-ended RPGs when it enters Early Access later this year.
