Nicky Hayen has told his under-fire Burnley players they need to dig deep to come through “a really difficult situation” after a 2-1 defeat at home by Bristol City left them rock bottom of the Championship.
The Turf Moor crowd vented their anger – most vehemently towards the owner, Alan Pace – after Aaron Ramsey’s 56th-minute opener for the Clarets was overturned by an 82nd-minute header from Rob Dickie and a brilliant stoppage-time strike from City substitute Yu Hirakawa.
Hayen has collected just two points from his five league games since being appointed in July after Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League, but the embattled Belgian remains adamant he can turn things round.
“I completely understand the fans, they’re frustrated and disappointed,” said Hayen. “Of course, it’s not nice to experience this, but I understand and I can accept it. The only thing we can do is keep on fighting back and showing resilience.”
Two late goals underscored West Ham’s second home victory in the space of five days and a 3-0 win over Derby that was less decisive than the scoreline suggests. After leading by an early Joël Piroe goal, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side lost their fluidity as the game progressed and were grateful to the substitutes Edvin Austbø and Mohamadou Kanté, each of whom scored their first goal for the club.
Leicester’s stuttering start to life in League One continued with a 4-0 home defeat by Oxford.
The Foxes, like their opponents relegated from the Championship last season, were looking to build on their first league win in midweek, but fell behind to an early goal from Mark Harris.
Oxford then put the game to bed with two goals in the space of three minutes either side of the hour from Mo Missanga and Harris before Jamie McDonnell’s late strike completed a chastening afternoon for Russell Martin’s side.
Sheffield Wednesday picked up their fourth win from five games to sit top after beating Peterborough 2-1 through a 79th-minute goal from defender Yan Valery.
Reading's manager, Leam Richardson, said his side put in a better performance in their 3-1 victory over Blackpool than in the 5-0 rout of Mansfield three days earlier. Goals from George Earthy and Kyreece Lisbie, his first for the club, gave Reading a 2-0 lead early in the second half. Although Leighton Clarkson reduced the deficit with 10 minutes left, Jacob Brown struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
“I enjoyed that,” Richardson said. “Full credit goes to the players. On the back of Wednesday [Mansfield game], I thought that we played better today than we did then, to be honest."
Huddersfield are a point behind, having been held to a 1-1 draw at home by Notts County.
At the other end of the table, Wigan slumped to the bottom on the back of a 4-0 home defeat against Stockport, who sit third on nine points alongside Bradford after their 1-0 home win over Mansfield.
