Experts classified the tornado as an EF1 rating with maximum wind speeds estimated at 165 km/h

Officials have confirmed a tornado touched down in Detroit, crossed the international border and tore through an east Windsor neighbourhood Thursday afternoon.

Investigators from the Northern Tornadoes Project surveyed the damage Friday and determined the storm that ripped apart a Windsor home, uprooted mature trees and knocked out power to thousands was an EF1 tornado with maximum wind speeds estimated at 165 km/h.

“This appears to be a continuation of an EF2-rated tornado through Detroit and crossing the Detroit River and Belle Isle,” NTP officials said in a social media post.

The confirmation gave answers to many who experienced Thursday’s violent storm that left a dramatic trail of destruction throughout the city, but particularly in east Windsor.

Among the most devastating scenes was on Buckhingham Drive near Riverside Drive East, where the storm tore the roof and part of a wall from a home. Large sections of the roof were carried about a block before crashing onto homes and property on Ford Boulevard.

The storm also uprooted mature trees, blocked streets and knocked out electricity to about 8,000 Enwin Utilities customers at the peak of the damage.  Areas that were hit the hardest were near Pillette Road, Riverside Drive, Grand Marais Road East and the neighbourhood of Fontainebleau.
