Independent studio Team Ruphi has announced Guns and Gargoyles, a dark fantasy action RPG that blends old-school pixel art with survival elements. The game’s demo is now available on Steam, giving players a first look at its grim take on folklore and monster hunting.

“Guns and Gargoyles was designed to invoke that old school nostalgic rpg feel. I want it to be a game where you can immerse hours of your life” said Abin Babu, Founder at Team Ruphi.

Set in an alternate version of 19th-century Germany, Guns and Gargoyles follows Hasko Brand as he travels through the mysterious Schwarzwald, or Black Forest, in search of an ancient evil. The journey begins after Hasko’s carriage crashes on its way to an abandoned abbey. Hence leaving him without his rifle and with only a torch, knives, and a sword to survive the dangerous forest.

Combat takes place in real time rather than using turn-based mechanics. Players can throw knives and pull them from fallen enemies, use Molotov cocktails to burn groups of creatures. They can also rely on a sword when enemies get too close. The forest is full of wolves, bats, bears, and far more terrifying creatures lurking in the darkness. The game also puts a strong focus on atmosphere, with Hasko’s torch illuminating only a small portion of the world.

The demo offers a glimpse into Hasko Brand’s dangerous journey, and there appears to be plenty more waiting beyond it. For fans of retro RPGs and dark fantasy, Guns and Gargoyles could be one to keep an eye on.
