MapQuest is now testing experimental support for Android Auto amid its surge in popularity.
The company announced the app’s arrival on Android Auto on x/Twitter, and showed off the changelog for its Sept. 1 update.

Outside of Android Auto support, the latest update will also bring a new crowdsourced incident reporting feature that, so far, can report on collisions, closures, traffic, police activity, and other incidents. The update now also defaults the unit of measurement to metric based on the region.
Now, a deleted post on the Android Auto subreddit from early adopters noted that it is still really experimental. Users reported a heavily zoomed-out perspective, latency issues, and even notifications that mention “CarPlay” despite being on Android devices, pretty much pointing out that this was thrown together from its CarPlay counterpart. Now, MapQuest did note that it is a beta, so I imagine it won’t be long before it is fixed.
As Android Authority pointed out, now that native Android Auto support is in testing, anyone looking to switch has even more reason to stay with MapQuest after the initial hype wears off.
Honestly, this update also fixed a lot of the issues I noted when I first mentioned MapQuest as an alternative earlier this week. This included the fact that there was no way to see which roads were closed; however, I’m hoping a future update adds a public transit feature (including trains, not just buses and subways!).
