Rock star John Douglas has sadly died aged 63 as tributes poured in for the musician. He is best known for being the guitarist and singer of the rock band Trashcan Sinatras. John died following a "brief illness". Bandmates Francis Reader, Paul Livingston, Stephen Douglas and Davy Hughes confirmed the news of his death in a heartbreaking statement shared on social media today.
It read: “We are devastated to inform all of you that we have lost our dear friend and brother John after a brief illness. He died peacefully in the early hours of Monday the 3rd August 2026, surrounded by loved ones, his beautiful voice and songs filling the room.”
The news of his death comes just four days after the release of the band's latest album, Ever The Optimist. It is the band’s first full-length release in 10 years.
Tributes have since poured in from heartbroken fans as they offered their condolences.
One fan wrote: "My heart aches so terribly! I’m still in utter shock and dismay. I’ve loved and listened to John’s voice for 36 years. I’m so deeply sorry for all the band, his family, Eddi and the boys. This is going to take some time. We’ll remember you for your kindness, humility, talent, and dedication to the music. Rest well, John."
A second penned: "Incredibly sad to learn the news. There is no other group that I hold as special as the @thetrashcansinatras. Sorry for the loss to the band/brothers, family and friends. An amazing talent and beautiful person John is. The music will live an eternity. Much love and thank you for the music."

Another wrote: "We weren't expecting this news. I remember seeing John in Seattle when he toured behind his solo album in 2024, and for the acoustic shows he, Frank, Paul.did in 2018-19. He was a warm.presenter on stage and let his songs express his emotions. My thoughts go out to Eddi, Frank, Paul, Davy, and Stephen for their loss."
Stephen Douglas is John's brother, and the pair, along with Livingston joined Reader and Hughes after the band was launched in 1986.

Trashcan Sinatras rose to fame with their hit single Obscurity Knocks, which featured on their debut album Cake. It also included hits like Only Tongue Can Tell and Circling the Circumference.
John joined the Scottish indie rock band in 1986 which was formed in his hometown of Irvine.
The band's discography spans seven studio albums and John performed on each one, including the 1993 fan favourite I’ve Seen Everything.
He went on to release his debut solo LP in 2024.
Outside the group, Douglas toured extensively across the UK and Ireland with his partner Eddi Reader’s band.
