A 32-year-old man has died after being seriously assaulted on a London Underground platform while travelling home from Notting Hill Carnival, turning a late-night attack into a fatal incident. British Transport Police said the man was assaulted at Liverpool Street station on Sunday night and was taken to hospital in critical condition. He died on Tuesday, according to police.
The victim had reportedly attended the Families and Children's Day at Notting Hill Carnival in west London before making his way home. Police were called to Liverpool Street Underground station at 10:51pm after receiving reports of a serious assault on the Central line platform.
The 32-year-old was taken to hospital after the assault but remained in critical condition until his death on Tuesday. British Transport Police confirmed the fatality as officers continued investigating what happened at the station.
Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn said the victim's loved ones were being supported by specially trained officers. Police also appealed to anyone who witnessed the assault and had not yet spoken to investigators to come forward.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation have not been fully disclosed. Investigators are continuing to establish what happened before the attack and what led to the violence on the platform.
A 38-year-old British man has already been charged in connection with the attack. Jeremiah Maximo, from Barking, had previously been charged with grievous bodily harm and was due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court.
Following the victim's death, British Transport Police said prosecutors would seek to amend the charge against Maximo. The defendant was therefore expected to appear in court at a later date as the investigation moved forward. Police have not indicated whether anyone else has been arrested in connection with the fatal assault.
The death is likely to bring increased scrutiny to the incident because the victim was reportedly returning from one of London's biggest annual public events.
The man was believed to have been attending the Families and Children's Day at Notting Hill Carnival before travelling east across London.
He was making his way home from the carnival when the assault took place. The annual event attracts huge crowds to west London and is one of Europe's largest street festivals.
Despite the fatal assault, the Metropolitan Police said the overall atmosphere during the first day of the carnival had been 'overwhelmingly positive and celebratory.'

However, officers made numerous arrests during the event. It was reported that 169 arrests had been made on the first day by 7:45pm Sunday. According to the Metropolitan Police, the arrests involved offences including drug possession, weapons offences, assaults and sexual offences.
The fatal Tube attack occurred separately at Liverpool Street, several miles from the main carnival route.
Detective Superintendent Blackburn urged anyone who saw the assault to contact investigators. Police said even seemingly minor information could prove important as detectives reconstruct the moments before and after the attack.
