One of the biggest problems with switching from Windows to Linux has always been software compatibility. Linux has thousands of applications, but there are still Windows programs that people depend on for work, school, creative projects, and everyday computing.
That is where Wine and its various frontends come in. Instead of running Windows inside a virtual machine, compatibility layers allow many Windows applications to run directly on Linux. Some Linux distros make this process considerably easier than others.
I tried five distros that take different approaches to Windows compatibility and they are not all designed for exactly the same audience. Some are explicitly aimed at Windows users, while others have built extensive Wine and Proton support around their gaming ecosystems.
Zorin OS immediately stood out because it treats Windows application support as part of the desktop experience rather than something you have to build yourself.
The current Zorin OS release supports .exe and .msi files through its optional Windows App Support component. Once installed, you can launch a Windows installer from the file manager and follow the normal installation process. Zorin says this support is powered by Wine.
That sounds like a small convenience, but it makes a substantial difference when you are actually using the operating system. You do not have to start by learning Wine prefixes, searching for obscure commands, or figuring out which frontend you need. The operating system gives you a relatively familiar workflow.
Zorin has also gone further in how it handles Windows applications. It has introduced a database that recognizes popular Windows installers and recommends the best way to use them. The current system covers more than 240 applications, potentially directing users toward a native Linux version, web application, or Windows compatibility option when appropriate. For someone coming directly from Windows, that makes Zorin the easiest recommendation on this list.
This other distro is sleek, easy to use, and has built-in support for Windows apps.
Winux, commonly known as Wubuntu, takes a different approach. Rather than simply making Windows applications easier to install, it tries to make Linux feel much more familiar to Windows users. It even allows you to run Android applications.
The desktop environment, menus, icons, and general presentation are designed around the idea that someone accustomed to Windows should be able to sit down and start using the system without completely relearning the desktop. That makes Wubuntu interesting for this experiment because the distro’s appeal is closely tied to the Windows-replacement concept (it even has Microsoft Edge installed by default).
The problem is that looking like Windows and running Windows software are two different challenges. Wine can provide impressive compatibility, but the underlying limitations remain. An application that depends heavily on proprietary Windows components can require additional configuration, and compatibility can change significantly between applications.
Wubuntu therefore makes sense for users who want a Windows-like Linux desktop and want access to Windows software, but I found Zorin’s approach more polished and better integrated.
Bazzite is where this comparison gets interesting because it shows how far Linux compatibility has progressed, even on a distro strongly associated with gaming. Bazzite can run Windows applications through Wine-based tools. You can use tools like Lutris and WineZGUI for Windows executables, including non-gaming software.
However, gaming is clearly the center of gravity. Steam and Proton are deeply integrated into the Bazzite experience, and the distro provides extensive tooling for Windows games. Proton itself is a major reason Windows software compatibility has become so visible in the Linux world.
