Multiple civilians were killed and two police officers were injured when an active shooter opened fire at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building Wednesday afternoon.

One of the officers was shot in the stomach and the other was shot in the leg while responding to a shooting near 15 East Grant Street, KSTP reports.

A law enforcement source also confirmed to the network that multiple civilians were killed in the attack. 

Photos from the scene show a massive police presence at the Loring Towers, as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it was sending its agents to the scene.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz added that his public safety team was also responding to the shooting, and noted that state officials are 'on the ground to support local law enforcement.'

Officers are now asking the public to avoid the area. 

Meanwhile, a nearby hotel was placed on lockdown.
