Developer FakeFish and publisher Shiro Unlimited have officially kicked off the closed beta for Frostrail, their co-op survival FPS set in a frozen post-apocalyptic wasteland. The playtest arrives as part of Steam’s PvE Survival Crafting Fest, giving players a chance to experience the harsh world before its planned Early Access release later this year.
Frostrail puts up to four players in an ultimate challenge of survival. They will board a train and venture into an endless blizzard in search of supplies. Players will explore the remains of abandoned villages, mining camps, and underground vaults while scavenging for food, materials, and weapons. However, staying outside for too long can be deadly. This forces players to make it back to the train before the freezing conditions take their toll.
The cold is not the only danger. The wasteland is also home to terrifying creatures known as Revenants, which can ambush players during their expeditions. Thankfully, survivors can fight back using a range of melee and ranged weapons.
The train also serves as the group’s main base. Players can use the scavenged resources to craft weapons, armor, research stations, medical bays, and additional train cars, gradually transforming the locomotive into a mobile fortress.
“Throughout development, community feedback has been central to making Frostrail the best game it can be,” said Ez Jämsen, Lead Designer at FakeFish. “With the launch of today’s Closed Beta, we’re eagerly awaiting the next batch of survivors and excited to hear their feedback as we prepare for our Early Access launch later this year.”
Frostrail is scheduled to launch in Steam Early Access in Q4 2026. For survival fans, this frozen journey is shaping up to be one worth keeping an eye on.
