SHELTON – A pair of cats found abandoned in a Shelton parking garage have died, and now an animal rights association is offering a $5,000 reward for information regarding the case.
"Animal abandonment is a crime! Someone knows who did this!" Desmond's Army Animal Law Advocates wrote in a Facebook post announcing the reward.
Animal Control Officers were dispatched to a Merion Riverwalk parking garage on Sunday evening, where they reportedly found the two black-and-white "tuxedo" cats. Authorities pronounced one dead at the scene, and the other was subsequently transported to the VCA Shoreline Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center. The cat was euthanized later that evening when its condition was determined to be "too far gone," according to Desmond's Army.
Zilla Cannamela, the president and co-founder of Desmond's Army, said in an interview that both cats were brought by animal control to a University of Connecticut diagnostics center for necropsies.
While local authorities conduct an investigation, Cannamela hopes the reward will encourage people to come forward.
"We determined that $5,000 is a good amount that helps people to pay attention," she said in an interview.
Desmond's Army Animal Law Advocates is a 501(c)3 charitable organization with a large footprint in the state of Connecticut. The group is dedicated to animal rights and serving as a "voice for the voiceless" according to its website.
