Amazon is cutting nearly 150 jobs at offices in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, joining another major technology company planning layoffs in the Bay Area.

The e-commerce and cloud computing giant disclosed plans to eliminate 148 positions – 78 in San Francisco and 70 in Sunnyvale – in notices filed with California employment regulators. The cuts are expected to take effect beginning Oct. 20.

At the company's downtown San Francisco office at 350 Bush St., 76 of the affected employees are listed as members of technical staff. The other two positions are a software development engineer and a senior manager in user experience and design.

In Sunnyvale, the cuts include software development engineers, applied scientists, data scientists, quality assurance engineers, technical program managers and managers, according to Amazon's filing.

The company's filings do not give a specific reason for the Bay Area reductions.

They follow broader job cuts at Amazon this year. In January, the company announced plans to eliminate about 16,000 positions globally as part of an effort to reduce management layers and bureaucracy.

Synopsys, the Sunnyvale-based maker of software used to design and test computer chips, filed a separate notice Monday saying it plans to permanently eliminate 128 jobs from its Sunnyvale campus on Dec. 16.

The Synopsys cuts span dozens of job classifications, with a heavy concentration in engineering and research and development.

The cuts come as Synopsys is carrying out a broader restructuring following its acquisition of engineering software company Ansys.

In a regulatory filing last week, Synopsys said the plan includes involuntary job cuts and some site closures and is expected to run through 2027
