Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, has apparently decided the path back to the negotiating table runs through America’s group chat.

He's very angry about all of the mean memes Americans have been making.

We thought it had to be a parody or joke, too, but nope. It's legit.

JUST IN: Mark Carney declares Canada will only resume trade talks with the U.S. when Americans “stop doing memes”

After walking away from trade talks and watching the two countries slap tariffs on each other, Mark Carney’s big condition for restarting discussions is that the United States stop making memes, stop throwing shade, and start acting like grown-ups. That is a bold strategy from a government that just lost a deal and then tried to scold the internet into submission.

If the official Canadian position is that sovereignty is non-negotiable but jokes about geese are a deal-breaker, the memes are not going anywhere. They are just getting better material.

It has just been this all along: pic.twitter.com/SDi8IMO1CY

He had to know it would only make us meme them harder, right?

So in other words, when pigs fly? pic.twitter.com/hY8NBAi5J7

Can we do maps? pic.twitter.com/sQm08q8yBd

So, we're not sure if we're allowed to use that meme, but we can't help it because it's hilarious. If we find out we can't use these memes, we'll apologize a lot.

We will stop doing memes as soon as Canada stops being so damn memeable. pic.twitter.com/3GcZ0AxqO4
