Danny Lloyd was just five years old when he landed a role opposite Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick's iconic 1980 horror film, The Shining. The child actor portrayed Nicholson's on-screen son, Danny Torrance, in the adaptation of Stephen King's 1977 novel.

Despite having appeared in one of the most famous horror films of all time, Danny now lives a quiet life away from the spotlight, having retired from acting aged 13.

Keep reading to find out more about Danny's life since turning his back on Hollywood.

Danny continued to audition for acting parts following his role in The Shining but found little success. When he was 13, he decided to leave the industry.

In a 2017 interview with The Guardian, Danny was asked whether he found the rejection upsetting. "No, I wouldn't say it was upsetting. I always enjoyed it. It was exciting. But as I got a little bit older, it got kind of boring," he said. "Then I had to tell my parents that I was ready to quit. Which they were fine with. They were never stage parents. They made sure I had a normal upbringing."

Danny has fond memories of his time on the set, and said he had a "good experience". "What happened to me was I didn't really do much else after the film. So you kind of have to lay low and live a normal life," he said.

During a 2023 interview on the YouTube series Celebrity Chatter & Things That Matter With Elijah, Danny revealed that the production team ensured he wasn't on set when scarier scenes were filmed.

"I was five years old but they took really good care of me," he said. "They made sure I wasn't around to see anything I wasn't supposed to."

Danny works as a biology professor at a community college in Kentucky, according to The Guardian.

Based on Stephen King's 1977 novel, The Shining follows struggling writer and recovering alcoholic Jack Torrance as he accepts a job as the winter caretaker of an isolated mountain resort hotel with his wife and son. Over the course of the winter, Jack spirals into madness and begins terrorising his family.

Jack Nicholson leads the cast as Jack Torrence, alongside Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrance and Danny Lloyd as Danny 'Do'" Torrance.
