The AUKUS pact has two pillars: the first describes Australia buying nuclear-propulsion submarines from the US, and the second, enhancing general military technology cooperation.
At the weekend, Australian Strategic Policy Institute senior fellow Elizabeth Buchanan pitched a third pillar: Antarctic security: “In the polar domain there could be a Pillar 3 of AUKUS — a polar security compact,” Buchanan told Politico. “It’s the roof, the ceiling and the floor of our Earth.”
It’s far from the first time an AUKUS extension has been proposed.
