Andy Burnham should be given a Guinness World Record for the number of U-turns he has made since becoming Prime Minister, the SNP’s Westminster leader has claimed.

Dave Doogan accused the Labour leader of breaking his promises and failing to deliver change.

Mr Burnham will face MPs for the first time since becoming PM as the House of Commons returns from summer recess.

The SNP has accused Mr Burnham of a series of U-turns, including his stance on re-joining the EU, tuition fees, and compensation for Waspi women.

Mr Doogan said: “Andy Burnham is breaking his promises and failing to deliver change – and he will face increased scrutiny of his policy U-turns and poor record as he finally faces MPs in Parliament for the first time.”

The MP for Angus and Perthshire Glens said energy bills have gone up since Labour came to power in 2024, despite promises by the party to reduce them by £300 by 2030, with “growing warnings that household bills will soar again this winter”.

Mr Doogan added: “He promised he would be different but, in his first month, Andy Burnham has already made more U-turns than Keir Starmer.

“He should be given a Guinness World Record for the most broken promises in the shortest space of time.

“On Brexit, Tory spending rules, public ownership, taxes, tuition fees, electoral reform and so many other fundamental issues, Andy Burnham has flip-flopped all over the place – making promises one month, and breaking them the next.

“The SNP stands ready to work with Andy Burnham on the issues that matter to people in Scotland – including the cost of living, which is sky-high under the Labour government.”

Mr Doogan said the Prime Minister should introduce a “major package” of financial support for those impacted by the cost of living.

He also said Mr Burnham should “start respecting Scottish democracy, including the democratic right of the people of Scotland to choose their own future in an independence referendum”.
