Makar, 27, signed an eight-year, $163.2 U.S. million contract with the Avs on Friday. The deal, which kicks in next season, is worth $20.4 million annually and is the richest contract in NHL history.

Makar’s cap hit is a reminder that the NHL’s escalating salary cap is evolving. With training camp set to get underway in September, high-scoring winger Drake Batherson remains unsigned with a Sept. 15 deadline to sign him to an eight-year deal looming large.
If no extension is signed by Sept. 15, Batherson and the Senators would lose the ability to secure an eight-year contract. Under the new CBA, the maximum term for a player re-signing with his current club drops from eight years to seven.
Batherson is entering the final season of a six-year deal that pays him $4.95 million U.S. annually, and he’s in for a big increase. Ottawa isn’t the only place this discussion is taking place; the Minnesota Wild need to sign blueliner Quinn Hughes.
