Telangana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Commission has called for a dedicated Minor Irrigation Act, immediate demarcation of Full Tank Level (FTL) boundaries, removal of encroachments and restoration of tanks across Telangana to strengthen water security and stabilise agriculture.
In a report submitted to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy here, the Commission recommended re-establishing a dedicated minor irrigation system equipped with modern technical units to improve water-use efficiency.
It also proposed command-area-based management systems to integrate minor and major irrigation resources and ensure more efficient use of available water.
It stressed that tank restoration and protection were critical for water security, agricultural stability and rural livelihoods in Telangana while calling for the FTL boundaries of tanks to be identified and demarcated on an immediate basis, with encroachments removed and the protected areas effectively safeguarded.
The report also proposed a separate legal framework for protecting tanks and other minor irrigation assets through a dedicated Minor Irrigation Act.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy asked the Commission to focus on crop diversification, expansion of horticultural cultivation and promotion of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) as part of efforts to improve farm incomes and strengthen agricultural sustainability.
Commission Chairman Kodand Reddy and members Ramulu Naik, Ram Reddy Gopal Reddy, Gangadhar and M Bhavani Reddy briefed the Chief Minister on the Commission’s work over the past two years and the recommendations it had submitted to the government, according to a release.
