One day a year, several streets across the city will shut down to allow residents to experience different neighbourhoods on foot. Pedestrians and cyclists will get free reign over east end roads during Windsor’s Open Streets event on Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Being the Motor City of Canada, we are often in our cars and we don’t take the time to really see our neighbourhoods the way you see it when you’re on foot or if you’re riding your bicycle” said Michael Chantler, the city’s comissioner of community services. “You can discover the things in your community that you probably didn’t even know were there.”
Due to roadside construction in the east end, this year’s routes will be split in two, one from Howard Avenue to Walker Road and the other from Drouillard Road to St. Rose Avenue.

Between the two routes there will be seven community hubs featuring family-friendly games, cultural activities, live performances as well as food and beverage options. The city will also be distributing collectible stickers at each hub with illustrations of some of Windsor’s famous landmarks.
Ward six Coun. Jo-Anne Gignac said after two years in the west end, she was pleased to see the community event return to the Riverside neighbourhood.
“I am so pleased to see that here we are again in the east end of the city providing an opportunity for people to visit this area and experience what’s available,” she said.
