Revellers have begun to descend on W10 as Notting Hill Carnival takes over West London for one of the world’s biggest street parties.
The annual celebration of Caribbean culture will see mas bands, steel pan bands, dancers, and sound systems light up the west London district in colour, glitter, and feathers.
This year’s festivities mark 60 years since the carnival’s inception, which was originally born out of resistance to racial injustice.
Following Saturday’s Steel Band Competition, today sees the colourful J’ouvert opening celebration at Ladbroke Grove followed by the much-anticipated Children’s Day and Dutty Mas parade, kicking off at Westbourne Park.
Sounds of calypso, samba reggae and soca are expected through the day until 7pm. Festivities will tomorrow continue when the Adult’s Day parade will mark the height of carnival.

We are moments away from the opening ceremony at Westbourne Park. Once the Carnival is officially declared open, thousands of masqueraders will begin their 3-mile journey around Notting Hill.
First up is the Children’s Parade – a real family day affair – with steel pan bands and thousands of intricate costumes on display.
Then, the Dutty Mas bands will follow, showering spectators with more paints and colour.
