If you see Nicole Kidman at a rave in Ibiza, don’t do anything to piss her off. She has powers. On the Practical Magic 2 press junket, Kidman and Sandra Bullock talked revenge spells with Kidman’s niece, Lucia Hawley. “I don’t know if you know this about the Kidman women,” Hawley told Bullock, “we sway to more magical side. Some people would say ‘witches.’” Kidman backed her niece up, saying she does the odd spell from time to time. Her fave are love spells, “But if I’m a little bit upset with someone, I will write their name and put it in the freezer.” Bullock, less familiar with one of WitchTok’s favorite life hacks, asked Kidman what that would even do. “Freezes them out,” Kidman replied. Lucia said their grandmother used to keep a shitlist under her ice cube tray.
Kidman has been on both sides of a spell or two. On the set of the OG Practical Magic, a witch who served as a consultant on the film cursed the production. “I invited her to come to Los Angeles to observe the rehearsals with Sandy and Nicole,” director Griffin Dunne said in 2017. “I had my producer make her a reservation at a nice hotel, and call her, and the witch goes, ‘You’re not going to buy me off with a hotel room. I want a percentage of the movie. I’m going to have my own Practical Magic cookbook.’ She was paid quite well, and she says, ‘I want an additional $250,000 dollars.’”
Dunne said Warner Bros. Paid off the witch, but Practical Magic still bombed on initial release. Now that the film is a cult classic with a sequel on the way, maybe the curse has been lifted? Or maybe Kidman’s freezer has more juice.
