Mahindra has extended its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) purchase option to every variant of its Electric Origin SUV portfolio, giving buyers of the BE 6 Sporteq, XEV 9S and XEV 9e the option of paying separately for the battery through a usage-linked EMI.
Under the expanded programme, the BE 6 Sporteq can be purchased for Rs 11.45 lakh with the battery charged separately at a usage rate of Rs. 3.75 per km. The XEV 9S is available through the BaaS programme from Rs. 12.65 lakhs, while the XEV 9e starts at Rs. 13.90 lakhs. Both models carry the same quoted battery usage rate of Rs. 3.75 per km.
The BaaS structure is intended to reduce the upfront purchase price of Mahindra’s electric SUVs by separating the cost of the battery from the vehicle. Instead of paying for the complete battery pack as part of the vehicle price, customers make a separate payment based on battery usage and the applicable financing arrangement.
According to Mahindra, the battery EMI starts at Rs. 6975, with the Rs. 3.75-per-km figure calculated using an assumed usage of 60 km per day and a specified down payment. The actual battery payment can differ depending on factors such as battery capacity, the amount paid upfront and the selected tenure.
The quoted BaaS figures do not include expenses such as electricity for charging, maintenance or repairs. These costs will therefore remain additional to the vehicle and battery payments.
With the programme now covering the full Electric Origin SUV range, customers have the option of choosing the BaaS model across different price points and body styles within Mahindra’s electric portfolio. The structure also gives buyers a lower initial vehicle price, although the overall ownership cost will depend on usage, financing terms, charging expenses and other running costs.
The expansion comes as automakers experiment with alternative pricing models for electric vehicles, where the battery represents a significant portion of the overall cost. For buyers who cover higher annual distances, the usage-linked battery payment could have a meaningful impact on total ownership expenses, making it important to compare the BaaS structure with the conventional outright battery purchase option before making a decision.
