Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 will run at 30fps at launch, although it hasn’t ruled out a 60fps option in the future.

The GTA 6 Extended Look may have shown off 27 minutes of gameplay, but it wasn’t very forthcoming in terms of specific details about the game.

A lot of that kind of information has emerged from previews in the aftermath, including the size of the game’s map and the return of the honour system from Red Dead Redemption 2.

Some technical details have also emerged thanks to Brazilian outlet Flow Games, with Rockstar’s head of development, Rob Nelson, telling them that the current version of GTA 6 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S is running at 30 frames per second.

Additionally, Nelson reportedly told the outlet that he’s unsure if a 60fps option would be possible in the future.

The excerpt from Flow Games, machine-translated from Portuguese, reads: ‘According to the director, it is still necessary to consult the technical team to determine if there will be a 60fps option at launch (or in the future).

‘He also emphasises that he does not currently have details on resolution and other technical qualities, such as the use of ray tracing, but the performance, for now, is 30fps.’

While Rockstar doesn’t rule out a 60fps option (this only came to GTA 5 when it launched on current gen systems), 30fps for GTA 6 is perfectly reasonable considering the level of graphical detail on display and the type of game it is.

Many games today give you the option of prioritising the graphics or performance via a toggle, but for a game like GTA 6, that isn’t 100% action (unlike something like Devil May Cry, say) 30fps is a perfectly reasonable compromise.

This news shouldn’t be surprising either. Rockstar’s previous game, Red Dead Redemption 2, still doesn’t have a 60fps mode – although there have been rumours of a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X patch for some time.

We’ll have to wait and see if GTA 6 does get a 60fps mode at launch, but it might be something Rockstar prioritises for the PC version at a later date. Although it’s slightly surprising they haven’t said anything about improved performance via PS5 Pro.

GTA 6 is set to launch across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19, 2026.
