Nepal is at risk of a “second wave” after Wednesday’s deadly flood that left hundreds dead and missing.
At least 362 people have been killed in the flash floods and landslides that have wiped out entire villages in Nepal and Tibet.
Evacuation orders are in place for Jilong port, before
an “imminent” second flood, according to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.
The second flood is likely to be caused by a blockage of debris lodged upstream on the Nepal-China border, it said.
“Such blockage can create a secondary hazard if impounded water is suddenly released,” a spokesman for the organisation said.
Basanta Raj Adhikari, director of the Centre for Disaster Studies at the Tribhuvan University in Nepal, said “second and third waves” were likely to come on Friday or Saturday.
Rescue efforts are continuing to locate at least 1400 missing people, including a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy who are among 33 British tourists unaccounted for.
