Gold (GC=F) December futures opened at $4,650 per troy ounce on Thursday, August 27, 2026, down just 0.1% compared to Wednesday's closing price. The price of gold moved back up this morning, trading at $4,648.90 as of 7:59 a.m. ET.

After two straight days of opening above $4,700, this morning's opening gold price pulled back from those levels after yesterday's latest inflation report, but is holding at a double-digit month-over-month increase.

The latest look at inflation, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE), only amplified the "division within the central bank on whether to raise interest rates" next month, wrote Yahoo Finance's Jen Schonberger. A decision to hold rates steady in September could lead to even more growth in gold prices:

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge showed prices remained sticky in July, reinforcing division within the central bank on whether to raise interest rates as policymakers gather this week for their annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

While prices remained sticky year over year, month-over-month data pointed to a slower pace of increase, a positive signal for those who are content to hold interest rates steady, though it's unlikely to quiet the hawks.

Silver (SI=F) September futures opened at $68.09 per ounce on Thursday, August 27, 2026, up 0.1% from Wednesday's closing price. Silver prices inched higher this morning, reaching $68.99 as of 8:17 a.m. ET.

Silver prices opened in the $68 range yet again this morning following yesterday's inflation report.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) report, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, showed price growth on both a monthly and yearly basis, largely in line with analysts' expectations. But despite meeting expectations, the report did little to quell the division within the Federal Reserve on what should happen with interest rates next month.

Silver investors, much like everyone else, now have their attention squarely focused on Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's first official speech as leader of the Federal Reserve Friday at the Fed's Jackson Hole summit. Observers are hoping for more clues as to whether the Fed will raise or hold rates steady in September.
