The good Dr Samuel Johnson supposed a fortnight’s notice of the gallows was enough to concentrate a man’s mind wonderfully. The late Peta Murphy, forged from sterner stuff than most of the men in parliament, kept hers fixed for 12 years on doing the best she could with whatever time she had left.
Murphy died of breast cancer in late 2023, five months after the inquiry she chaired into gambling reform released its report, “You win some, you lose more”.
