Mahindra is preparing an update for the three-door Thar, with two test mules of the facelifted SUV recently spotted testing together. The latest sighting suggests that development of the updated model is nearing completion, with the facelift expected to bring several styling revisions while retaining the familiar three-door silhouette.
The updated Thar is also expected to borrow some design cues from the larger Thar ROXX, particularly at the front. However, recent spy images indicate that Mahindra may not simply replicate the five-door SUV’s styling across the three-door version.
The latest spy video, shared by Instagram page The Path Finder, shows two camouflaged Thar test mules parked alongside a road. Both vehicles feature camouflage concentrated around the front and rear sections, while much of the side profile remains visible.
The most significant changes are expected at the front. The facelifted Thar appears to feature circular LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, giving it a design closer to the Thar ROXX. Earlier test vehicles had also been spotted with a grille resembling that of the five-door SUV.
Interestingly, the latest prototypes appear to feature a different grille design with four broad slats. This suggests that Mahindra could be developing a distinct visual identity for the three-door Thar rather than directly carrying over the ROXX’s front-end design.
The front bumper remains concealed under camouflage, so its final design cannot be confirmed yet. However, revisions to the bumper are possible as part of the facelift. The prototypes also appear to feature parking sensors at the front, which would be a useful addition to the compact but relatively upright SUV.
The side profile of the facelifted Thar appears largely unchanged. The SUV retains its characteristic boxy proportions, chunky side cladding, exposed door hinges, black grab handles and familiar ORVM design.
The most noticeable update on the side is the set of new 18-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels. Compared with the current design, these wheels give the SUV a more contemporary appearance and could also help differentiate the facelifted model from the existing Thar.
There does not appear to be any major change to the roof or overall body structure, indicating that Mahindra is likely focusing the update primarily on styling and equipment rather than making substantial structural changes.
The rear section was not clearly visible in the latest sighting. However, previous test mules have indicated that Mahindra could introduce redesigned LED taillights as part of the facelift.
A revised rear bumper is also expected, potentially incorporating reverse parking sensors. Beyond these changes, the overall rear design is likely to remain familiar, preserving the upright and rugged character that defines the three-door Thar.
The three-door Thar facelift appears to be an evolutionary update rather than a comprehensive redesign. Mahindra is expected to retain the SUV’s core styling and proportions while adding newer lighting elements, alloy wheels and revised bumpers.
The stronger visual connection with the Thar ROXX could also help bring the three-door model in line with Mahindra’s latest SUV design language. At the same time, the different grille seen on the latest prototypes suggests that the company may retain some distinction between the two versions.
More details about the facelift, including its feature list, powertrain options and launch timeline, are expected to emerge as Mahindra continues road testing the SUV ahead of its market introduction.
