Dan James sets Leeds on way, Nathan Collins doubles up
Peterborough thump Watford 5-1, West Ham win 4-1
Leeds secured a second win at Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest in three days to book a spot in the Carabao Cup third round. Dan James’s 50th-minute opener and a Neco Williams own goal earned a 2-0 victory for Daniel Farke’s side to back up Saturday’s 1-0 league success.
Before the weekend, the West Yorkshire club had not won at the City Ground since 1972. After defeat, new Forest manager Oliver Glasner said he is not a “magician”.
“Right now, we are far away from where we want to be,” Glasner said. “The fact is that this team had a relegation battle for nine months. Very turbulent season and it ended with a huge effort to stay in the league, and this is our starting point.
“It’s really very important not to blame anybody because sometimes I tell them facts and they say, ‘Oh, Glasner is complaining’. No, no, no. But then maybe your best midfielder [Elliot Anderson] leaves the club and now we expect we compete for European places because Oliver Glasner is in. Sorry, this is what I can’t deliver within six weeks. I’m no magician, no messiah, just hard work. That is what we have to do.”
Callum Wilson scored just six minutes into his full debut and captain Nathan Collins headed home twice as Brentford hammered Birmingham 6-1 at St Andrew’s. Aaron Hickey, Mikkel Damsgaard and Igor Thiago were also on target for the Bees after Demarai Gray briefly cancelled out Wilson’s opener.
League One Peterborough stormed into round three by thumping Championship Watford 5-1 at Vicarage Road. Hornets head coach Alessio Dionisi paid a heavy price for making 11 changes as James Clarridge’s own goal, Harry Leonard’s double and strikes from Bolu Shofowoke and Harrison Jones clinched an emphatic upset.
Hull required penalties to beat second-tier Stoke. The Tigers won 5-4 in the shootout after Kieran Dowell cancelled out Robert Bozenik’s goal in a 1-1 draw.
Teenager Josh Ayala scored twice on his full professional debut as West Ham came from behind to thrash Championship rivals Southampton 4-1. Taty Castellanos and Jarrod Bowen sealed the Hammers’ victory at St Mary’s after 19-year-old Ayala’s double overturned Léo Scienza’s opener.
West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo saluted Ajala afterwards. “It is important for Josh,” he said. “He works hard every day in training to get chances in games. We are delighted he took the opportunity.”
Marcelino Núñez scored a sensational goal from the halfway line as part of a brace to help Ipswich beat Leicester 3-1.
Middlesbrough avenged last season’s exit at the hands of Doncaster with a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Kyle Joseph, Will Lankshear and Jeremy Sarmiento.
