Cosmic horror and sea bird waddling sim Penguin Colony gave me a genAI fright in its release date trailer, but thankfully there's no actual cause for concern

You might be surprised to hear this given the very indie vibe about it, but Penguin Colony features RTX. It's actually AAA too, and includes DLSS as well. Perhaps most shockingly of all, there's genAI in Penguin Colony. It's true! It's all true! You can see it in the game's latest trailer for yourself. Look, right there, RTX: Real Terror eXploration. And there's GENeral Antarctic Isolation, Does Lovecraft Still Scare, and Ancient Abomination Awakens to boot! Is your brief heart attack over now? Yes, this is all a tongue in cheek ploy to get you to recognise that the next game from the devs behind Umurangi Generation has a release date.

It's a genre-appropriate one too, as the cosmic horror, penguin waddling simulator is due out October 8th, just under two months away. Outside of poking fun at the wider games industry and its penchant for buzzwordy tech that adds frames or steals from underpaid artists or whatever, the new trailer mostly shows off a human wandering around a hellish version of the Antarctic, waving a gun around as humans are want to do, before succumbing to an eldritch madness and shifting the POV to one of the game's many humble penguins.

I don't know if that means we'll be playing as a human at any point in the game, the whole, very delightful shtick here is that we're playing as penguins, but I have seen in progress bits from another Origame Digital game that was in the works at some point that did utilise weaponry, so perhaps this is just a bit of joshing for the sake of marketing. Still, if I wasn't already looking forward to Penguin Colony, it probably would have at least somewhat worked!

Back in June I had a go at Penguin Colony in its awkward but cosmically intriguing demo, writing at the time that the "demo is short, but does at least set the groundwork for a unique critique of fascist ideology. Who could have thought you'd get something like that while playing as a penguin." That demo is still live and available to try out for yourself, so might as well pop over to the game's Steam page and do so, or at least give it a wishlist ahead of its release in October.
