The Midwinter Ball is the annual black-tie dinner at which the Canberra press gallery deepens its connections with the politicians it covers. Sometimes the relationship building begins well in advance, in the form of gifts from the nation’s media firms to the people in power. This year’s gala was attended by at least nine parliamentarians who received their $200 tickets from media businesses.
They include Labor Senator Charlotte Walker and Liberal Senator James Paterson (who got their tickets from News Corp), Liberal Senator Andrew McLachlan (The Guardian), Labor Senator Murray Watt (Sky News), and Labor Senator Katy Gallagher (The Canberra Times).
