After OpenAI revealed that one of its AI agents escaped the testing environment and breached Hugging Face, the CEO of the developer platform, Clément Delangue, has said the incident also highlights why open AI models deserve more attention. Speaking to CNBC’s Squawk on the Street, the Hugging Face CEO highlighted that China is currently leading the global AI race with open-weight models and may even overtake US companies in advanced AI by the end of this year or early next year.
According to the report, Delangue said China has built a strong ecosystem around open AI development, allowing researchers to collaborate more freely than their counterparts in the US. He suggested that many US companies are developing models in isolation and stated, “They're building in silos.”
He said, “They're clearly dominating on open models right now, and I wouldn't be surprised if they start dominating at the frontier either by the end of this year or next year at the rate of progress."
These comments come weeks after OpenAI revealed that one of its AI agents hacked the systems of Hugging Face during an internal testing. The incident raised concerns about how advanced AI systems may be used in cyberattacks. At the same time, the Hugging Face CEO also said that the incident demonstrated the importance of open AI models, especially as the cost of running powerful AI tools continue to increase.
He attributed the breach to engineering mistakes rather than flaws in open-source AI itself. Delangue also revealed that Hugging Face responded to the incident using an Nvidia-optimised version of a Chinese open AI model.
Chinese open-source AI models have rapidly improved in recent months, narrowing the performance gap with leading US models. Their progress has triggered debate in the United States over whether access to powerful open-weight AI models should be restricted.
Last month, major technology companies including Microsoft, Palantir and Nvidia jointly urged policymakers not to impose restrictions on open-weight AI models, arguing that doing so could hurt innovation and competition.
