Since it's near the end of summer, it feels right to watch some movies on Netflix U.S. The first movie takes place in the Amazon rainforest, where a group of people come face-to-face with an aggressive and gigantic snake.
We head to the ocean for the second creature feature on the list. Unsurprisingly, the villainous creature is a shark, the apex predator of the sea. For our top selection of the week, we’re leaving the water behind for the battlefield to embark on a tense life-saving mission.
There is a special place in my heart for Anaconda, a 1997 adventure horror movie directed by Luis Llosa. I like to refer to Anaconda as a “so bad it’s good” movie, in which you accept its flaws—and there are many—and embrace its ridiculous nature. There is charm in its ridiculous nature, from the laughable one-liners to Jon Voight's insane accent.

A documentary crew—including director Terri Flores (Jennifer Lopez), cameraman Danny Rich (Ice Cube), and Dr. Steven Cale (Eric Stoltz)—embarks on a journey down the Amazon River in search of a long-lost tribe. The group encounters snake hunter Paul Serone (Voight) along the way, who says he can help locate the tribe. Once Serone gets a chance to take control of the boat, he succeeds. Serone is after a massive anaconda and uses the boat and crew to find it.
The ensuing voyage becomes one of tragedy and regret, as the anaconda picks off the group one by one. Some of the CGI in these scenes is laughably poor, but again, I’m charmed by its ability to embrace its imperfections. If you don’t believe me, trust Roger Ebert, who awarded Anaconda 3.5/4 stars.
Jaws is the best and worst thing that ever happened to shark movies. On one hand, it’s a seminal classic and helped create the Hollywood template for blockbusters. On the other hand, no other shark movie has ever come close to matching its acclaim and cultural impact. I'm not saying The Shallows is as good as Jaws. It's not. What I will say is that The Shallows might be the best shark movie of the 21st century.
