Kerala is emerging as a fast-growing market for carpooling, with passenger activity on intercity mobility platform BlaBlaCar rising 50 per cent year-on-year in recent months, significantly ahead of the platform’s 35–40 per cent growth nationally.
The company attributed the growth to Kerala’s strong road connectivity and well-developed highway network, as well as rising fuel costs and growing awareness of the benefits of sharing travel costs.
The growth in Kerala is part of a broader expansion of intercity carpooling in India. During the first half of 2026, BlaBlaCar recorded 12.14 million passenger journeys across the country, helping travellers collectively save ₹492.7 crore. India is currently the platform’s largest carpooling market globally.
The company said wider adoption of carpooling could improve vehicle utilisation, reduce single-occupancy journeys and contribute to lower emissions.
However, regulatory clarity remains important for the sector’s continued growth. App-based carpooling and private-vehicle cost-sharing currently operate in what the company described as a regulatory grey area.
“A framework that recognizes the distinction between non-commercial cost-sharing and commercial passenger transport can provide greater clarity for commuters, drivers, and authorities. It would allow states such as Kerala to fully realize the potential of shared mobility as part of their wider transportation ecosystem,” said Jit Banerjee, Director, BlaBlaCar India.
Clearer regulations, the company said, could provide greater confidence to both drivers and passengers and enable more structured growth of the category.
With increasing consumer demand and an established road network, Kerala could see carpooling become a more prominent component of its intercity mobility ecosystem, offering a lower-cost travel option while improving vehicle utilisation and easing congestion.
