Calgary-hailing five-piece Self-Cut Bangs describe themselves as Fleetwood Mac with "more guitar solos" in place of the drama and drugs, and they're about to put that artistic statement to the test with their third studio album Growth Spurts, out October 16 via Trickle Down Music.
"Inspired by and about the rapid musical, romantic and familial growth within the band," the album's "big hooks, guitars, hearts and lyrics paint a picture of growing close, growing a sound, growing up and growing a human," according to the band (whose member Cayley Petsche is a mom, hence the human-growing). In the time since their 2022 album Circle Around the Free, the band has also undergone two marriages, that of Cayley and Shawn Petsche and Nicola and Dillon Cavanagh-Whitfield — Fleetwood indeed!
"This first single, 'Ouroboros,' is, appropriately, the first song our new line-up wrote together," Cayley shared in a release. "It started coming together within the first minutes of our very first rehearsal; a testament to the instant chemistry the band holds. It's a song that touches on the complex feelings tied to the beauty of creating life and the death and re-birth of the self in doing so. The chorus mantra 'the all is one' paired with the snake imagery symbolizes the unity of all matter and eternal cyclic transformation."
